Introduction

Hi Everyone

First I will start by telling a little about myself. This is my first post so a short introduction is in order. I will be joined by 3 of my friends who will also be moderating this blog along with me. The description of the forum tells you that we are 4 friends in US, Canada, UK and Australia. We are starting this blog to provide information to students who are in India and planning to come to one of the above mentioned countries on study basis. We will provide you only with the information that is relevant and you ask for. As students who started off in the dark, we believe it can be really helpful and time saving to get all your answers at one place.

I have an engineering and MBA. I did my engineering in India and moved to Los Angeles to do my MBA. Currently I work in product management for an ecommerce company. Along the way I learnt a lot and feel that information can be really valuable to everyone back home.

In addition to providing information to students from India who want to come abroad for studies we will also try and answer any queries related to taxes etc for students and working professionals. Using the information collected and researched over the last few years I can provide help in the form of information for both F1 and H1 visa holders.

For us it is a hobby, so we will try and answer all your queries at the earliest. We expect question to range from - best ways to prepare for tests, to timings to how to contact recruiters at different universities. However there might be delays of upto 24 hours before we could answer all questions. We all have full time jobs so we will try and check the blog as regularly as possible.

On funny thing which just came to my mind that I have to share is regarding my H1 visa stamping. Since I was not getting an appointment at the New Delhi embassy for getting my H1 stamped, I went to Vancouver. After a lot of usual questioning and checking out our company's website I was thrown a totally unexpected question by the visa officer - "What is the color of Jeff's (my boss) hair" I was taken aback for a split second and then answered the question smiling. The visa officer then asked me feeling great at having thrown me off a little - "So you weren't expecting that quesiton - were you"? So never be surprised by what visa officers at interviews might come up with.

wow! good work to come up with an idea like this to help people with all their issues regarding higher studies abroad.I have seen many people struggling their way through to get the right information and more importantly to get a coherent information about the whole process. Kudos to all four of you to help people with all their queries. you guys been there ,done that and i'm sure you can put urself in the other person's shoe and guide them through....
Cheers to you all four!!! All the best....:)

Hi,
i am working for Wipro Technologies in Bangalore , India, I was thinking of giving GMAT next year.By next june i will have 3 years work experiance, are two years fair enough to get a seat in a good B school in the US? Please help me out in this one.

My collegue here has will have 2 years exp by next june , do you think it he could get a seat in a good B school?

Hi Arvind, I am more than glad to help you in your MBA choices. Regarding good MBA schools it is a very general statement. With 2-3 years experience you can get into almost any MBA school in the US, including the Ivy League. More than the school accepting you, I think it is more important to realize that in about 3 years of work experience you tend to get a lot more out of your MBA. With work experience you are able to relate a lot of teaching to your work in the corporate world and this helps immensely.

So as far as acceptance for MBA in US schools is concerned, that will not be a problem. If you have any kind of managerial experience i.e. direct reports, then that can help a lot. But some experience is better than nothing. Both you and your colleague will get admissions, although personally I believe 3 years is better than 2, although that does not imply that 6 is better than 5. I hope I was able to answer your question and if I can be of any help let me know and I will be more than glad to let you know.

Work has been extremely busy, but I do intend to post an interview or two with recruiters from different universities. So stay tuned for some exciting and informative posts. I hope to have at least one interview up on the blog by the end of this month. Best of luck for your GMAT.

Hi man!,
My name is Rahul,I work for Infosys in Pune and willl have a work exp of 2 years by next may ... i wrote CAT last year and had got 92%ile... and am thinking of giving GMAT... i am confident of getting a good score in GMAT ... so do you think colleges there would think twice before admiting me cuz i dont have 3 years work exp. or will the GMAT score suffice for the lack of work exp.? Thanx for entertaining our questions man!:-)

Hi man!! thanx a lot for the prompt reply!!! i guess applying in the US is a fine idea after all!.. thanxs a lot for the morale boost man!:-)

Hey Rahul there is nothing wrong with 2 years work experience. I know of people admitted to US schools without any work experience whatsoever. A good GMAT score definitely compensates for work experience to a certain extent although more depends on policy of the university. So your chances will be more dependent on the preference of the university concerned as well. You can check for any university on what the stats were for last year admissions and get an idea of their preferences in terms of work experience and GMAT score. So yes I would not hold myself back from applying if thats what you want to do. Sorry for the delayed reply as I was travelling.

hi ,
i am currently pursuing my enginnering i would like to apply for a MBA program in the U.S , could you please tell what is the minimum percentage for engg as i am about to take up GMAT....looking forward for your reply .......

hello mr. dependable,
Ur doing a real good job. Im really happy for u and want to thank u and ur friends who have helped me so much in achieving what i wanted. Im lucky i located u guys else things might not have been the way they r today. Thanx a ton.

i hav a question for u and it will help me if u ans it. My father is not staying with us and my mother and maternal grand father are going to sponsor my studies and the finance available meets and is a little more than what the univ is asking. since i am from India will it be to my disadvantage if I tell them about my father when I go to Chennai for my visa interview

Niranth a percentage anywhere between 65 to 75% is generally pretty good to get admission in a decent university. Your GMAT score plays a more important part than your undergrad percentage especially if you have a couple of year of work experience.

Regarding the question posted on the 14th of May - I would strongly suggest no hiding anything intentionally from the embassy officials. They are not concerned if you father stays with you or not. That is your personal matter and to the best of my knowledge does not play any part in their decision making process. So go for your interview without any fear of this question.

hi,
i 've got an opportunity to study in the University of Florida for the last semester of my computer science engineering.I will be going as the University i am studying in right now has a tie up with the University Of Florida and they allow students to study there for their last semester with a certain extra fee.The irony is that they do not provide any sought of scholarships for students and one has to entirely go in his\her behalf. As the fee is a little high and not easily affordable i will be taking a student loan and then pursuing my studies in Florida......now there is a lil' confusion in my mind regarding wherether i shd accept dis offer or nt as I've no clue abt the future prospects in terms of job opportunities for a b-tech student. If i m a lil' sure of the fact tht i'll get a decent job out there just being a plain b-tech i might den ponder over dis offer again.Though i have to go for higher studies later on and do my mba but mba from U.S. will cost me abt $10000 which is again nt affordable!! So i plan to do my 8th sem from Florida ,do a job, repay my loan and come back to India.this will surely giv me an edge over the others, exposure, work experience and a new kind of environment with people pouring in from all parts of the world. This is my tentative plan.....bt i just wan't to get a clear picture of the current scenario out there, for job prospects for engineers with an average score in b. tech and the approximate starting salaries one gets per annum. The dates are almost over so will have to take a decision soon.
also i'll be getting an f1 visa so will i be allowed to work on an f1 and what are the job prospects for an average student doing b.tech from an average university --jaypee university of information and technology
sir,i m in real trouble with this decision plizzz help me out.
eagerly waiting for ur reply.
regards,
Esha

I have a question which I am not sure if its relevant to your blog.... but I just want to try posting it here.. probably you may be able to help...
i was wondering if you would know of any courses I can take up (I am currently in the USA) to complete my 16 years of education as I have a BCom...

Hi, Its really good reading your blog. I am in a jeopardy and would like to post my situation to you.
I am a s/w engineer in Bangalore and having work-exp over 5 yrs. This includes more than 1.5 yrs of work-exp in the USA itself. I have been to the US on onsite projects. I would like to pursue my MBA in US. Some of my questions are.
1. How many students study who are in their 30s and married
2. I would be able to get a bank loan in India but wud I get jobs on campus to take care of my family daily expenditure
3. I am an above average student and not a genius, wut are chances of job placements in the current situation
Thanks for you time and advice

hello sirs,
I am an engineering student doing my BE third year in Electronics and Communication Engineering from a college affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. I am really confused about what to do after my Engineering studies. My problem can be broadly divided into the following two situations:
1. Though i am more interested in doing my management studies but people suggest me to do specialisation in engineering as i am equally good in technical aspects.

2. Further i had always aimed to do my higher studies abroad especially U.S. So i was merely stuck up between two options ie. GRE or GMAT. But then my close friend suggested me that management studies are best in India compared to U.S. Moreover, he told me that Ivy Leagues take in only students who have undergraduted from IITs.I felt my dreams crashing down as i had been always dreaming about Ivy Leagues!

So, can u please guide me on what is best for me to do after Engineering-GMAT, GRE or CAT(for IIMs). please note here that i dont have any work experience. Looking forward to your reply.
thank you

Please do not encourage the vicious trade of education business of Indian students abroad. The quality of some programs(2 year) in Indian universities are much better than the average post-grad programs in UK, USA and does not deserve 10-15 lakh investment. I know a lot of students who are literally robbed by these universities and suffered significant financial debts.

I ask all prospective Indian students to think responsibly and advisers to provide good advise to students and not to encourage students to invest large sums of rupees in the universities abroad.

Yearly there is about £110 million(GBP) (about 7700crores) brought in by Indian students to the UK. In exchange very few students( I think a matter of few hundreds) successfully find career here each year.
Please ask yourself how much loss you are causing to ?India by lavishly wasting the indian money paying to the greedy universities.

Hi Guys,
My sincere thanks to all of you for starting this very informative blog. I always had this idea of blog. Its nice to find like minded people.

hey, i am an indian citizen completing my high school senior year in indonesia. I got accepted in one of the public universities in us for b.eng in elecrical eng. however, it turns out my parents can't afford it. its approximately $28k per annum. they cn probably afford upto 14-15. what do you suggest? the university does not provide loans or scholarships to international student. i was considering taking a student loan from one of the indian banks. do you think i should proceed with this decision? any help will be appreciated! ps- the deadline to accept admission is may 1 so i would really appreciate any advise from your side..thanks!

It is never an easy call to spend that kind of money. I am a little surprised that a public university is asking for that kind of money. However if it is a really good one, then it can be worth it. Additionally, you can think about transferring to a different university at a lower cost if you really wanted to a semester or two into the program. The job opportunities are there if you have great grades and a good school.

hey im ganesh i want to study in canada,so can anyone say what things i need to prepare about?
should i have to clear ielets first?and yeah i dont have passport i am making it soon.pls advice it

Please let me know if you can also suggest jobs to Indians with MBA in India. I completed my MBA in HR from Pune, India and now want to work with US company in United States. Please help me in all aspect that would be required to proceed further. I have one and half years of experience in recruitment in staffing firm that recruits for US clients.

Please help me..Looking forward for your comments and reply.

Anshu, for all practical purposes it is very hard to get a job in a non technical field without any prior study or work experience in the US. For something like HR the employment laws vary a lot. The best bet would be to get a job with a US company in India which is open to sending folks from India to the US.

hi,
my name is lakshmi i'm studying b.tech 3rd yr with the percentage of 70& my branch is ece.I'm geting fear to study ms in us b'coz all are telling that there are no jobs in us. can u tell me how is the present situation in us r the industries hiring the students.

Lakshmi, first of all don't just go by what people say - it always help to do your own thorough research. In terms of jobs, yes the US economy has been going through a tough time, but there is actually shortage of quality engineers in pretty much all fields. One way to ensure you limit your risks is to get a really good score in your GRE so that you can get some sort of scholarship in a top university. If you can get a scholarship and a good university, I would not worry about job opportunities - the best never have to worry as they are always in demand.

hi...currently im working with wipro technologies. Its been 8 months that i am working.Next year im planning for MS.Guyz plz help me know whether at the present scenerio is it possible for a student to find on campus and off campus jobs there.

Kalyani, I am assuming you are asking about working while studying. Rules in the US allow students to work on campus for up to 20 hours - no more. Working off campus is illegal and I would strongly advise against trying that. Moreover it is important to spend time networking and reaching out to people early on in your first semester to get the right internship. There are a lot of jobs on campus but the good ones like teacher assistant and working in the library get taken very fast. So when you are ready to accept admission at a university, have that conversation with your counselor and get the details on how to secure an on campus job at that time. Do not wait to arrive in the US to have that conversation. Hope this helps you with your planning for MS in the US.

Hello Mr. Deshpande,

I(BE Computer Science) am planning for MIS in the US. However, I heard MIS might have fewer chances as compared to CS. I am bit reluctant to opt MIS for the following reasons:

1. I am not much into coding and development.
2. I would like to do something that involves Project Management, Scrum master or management
3. I have almost 4yrs of experience in Business Analysis and in Testing. I wouldn’t mind continuing in Business Analyst Role.
4. My GRE score might be ranging around 300 and 305.
5. On second thoughts, I was thinking to check for the business schools which accept GRE score.

Questions I have

1. Getting a job after MIS is difficult compared to CS
2. Doing MBA from a business school that accept GRE, will it be helpful in my career growth and again getting a job?
3. My GRE score might not be that great, so is it really safe to send my applications for MBA using GRE.
4. Applying for MBA might bit costly compared to MIS/CS, But will it make any difference in the salary structure for the entry level jobs afterwards.

Could you please suggest me the path that will be good my career. I would are really appreciate your help. Thanks!
