Preparing for 2007

NOW - Mar/Apr 2006 - is the right time to start making preparations if you are planning to come abroad for studies in 2007. Anytime after June, dates for exams like GMAT and GRE are far and few in between with waiting as long as 4 months. Those of you who give their exams by end August will be able to apply to universities in time. What is the benefit? All of you who want to corner a scholarship from a US/UK university need to be in the first round of applicants. Universities that normally give out scholarships tend to be more benevolent in the first round. Second and third round applicants find it harder to get those much needed aids. Also fellow ships are easier to secure and you have decisions by the universities by end Jan for the fall semester.

By getting early decisions you have more time to decide and a wider choice when accepted to multiple universities. So get going now. Most of the students think that preparing for the exam and appearing for it is the major part. Do not be fooled. Applying to an average of 7 universities takes at least a month. I will address university applications in another post.

So pull yourself up and start preparing and scheduling your exams. Majority of the students start preparing AFTER they have scheduled their GMATs, GREs or USMLEs. Before that the discipline is just not there. Getting the language exams - IELTS and TOEFL out of the way sooner is always recommended.

Sorry for the delayed response Umesh, but can you tell me till which standard you have completed your education. Knowing that I will be able to guide you better. As far as immigration to the US is concerned it is very hard. Coming to US as a student is easier. One of the few ways to immigrate is to marry a citizen. Other than that coming as a student on F1 and then securing job on H1 and having your employer file the green card is a better way to become a permanent immigrant. However I do not want this to be a post on immigration. So do tell me a little more about your educational background and then I will be able to guide you in the right direction.

Why should we study in USA? What makes it a desirable option?

There are many benefits of US education depending on your perspective. From a pure facilities and opportunities idea - US has the best research labs in the world for students in their Masters and Doctorate programs. Having had the exposure to world class research topics and facilities at school, one is able to find numerous opportunities in the respective fields at companies here. More research is carried out here in US than any other country in the world. If you like to be at the cutting edge of technology and research, then getting your higher education in a US university opens up huge opportunities for further growth.

However if you are not a student in the research and technology field, but more interested in management, then again studying in US makes a lot more sense. As mentioned earlier in one of my posts, majority of the students from India who come abroad to study are for business programs. Getting your bachelor's or master's in business administration from US exposes you to the latest in the field of management. With more and more US companies operating in India now, it makes all the more sense to be exposed to the business culture both in US as well as have the local knowledge of your home country.

US companies still have a high preference for management people with experience in the US. So after getting your business education and some work experience in US, going back to India can propel you up the management ladder in a relatively shorter time. Having been exposed to both cultures puts you at an advantage to others vying for similar high management positions. This is exactly the reason why the Silicon Valley has seen a lot of people from India jump at the opportunity to go back and work in India at plum job positions.

The third perspective is if your ultimate aim is to leave India and settle in the US for good. There are very limited and tedious ways of gaining the much coveted US citizenship. The easiest and shortest route to US citizenship for someone from India is marrying a US citizen. However if that doesn’t work you can try for an H1 visa and have your employer sponsor you for H1. Getting H1 for a non IT person is usually hard. Moreover if you are young, in early 20s and want to be educated as well, coming to US as a student from India, changing your status from F1 to H1 after graduating and then having your employer file your green card is another way of gaining US green card and finally US citizenship. However beware; it takes a long time to get your green card under the employer sponsored scheme. This is because of a long waiting period for people from India, China and couple of other countries.

So as you can see, the benefits are many. However it does not mean that they have to appeal to everyone. I have known people who have come here just for exposure to the business environment and studies and gone straight back to India to either run their own businesses or find themselves a job in India.

I hope I have been able to answer your question which was quite broad. If you need any specific information let me know.

I'm studying in Anna University ,Chennai second year B.E CSE.I have decided to study abroad but my overall % is just 60My questions are
1)Is it a need to get good score in our UG course to study in US or marks scored only in GRE & other tests are important,Thank you in advance.

Kumar, 60% is a decent percentage - not that great but nevertheless it will not prevent you from getting admission in most universities. Ivy League universities are a different ball game but other than that I would focus more on your GRE or GMAT score. Those play a bigger part in the decision making process especially if you have a couple of year of work experience after your undergrad.

Hi,
This is ritu, I've completed my B.Tech in 2009, and plan to go to USA next year on September. I have not yet started my preparation for the GRE exam. I plan to give my GRE in November. Do you think it’s too late to apply if I want to get a good scholarship? And will it help if I give the subject specific Gre along with the regular one?
